Embark your ship and settle into your stateroom. The vibrant city of Barcelona, with its lively culture and inviting outdoor spaces, preserves a rich history. Picturesque medieval lanes wind through the oldest part of the city, the Gothic Quarter, where remnants of the city’s Roman wall were uncovered. Its treasures include the neo-Gothic Barcelona Cathedral, the medieval Jewish district of El Call and the Romanesque Church of Santa Maria del Pi. In the evenings, diners relax in the Royal Plaza at restaurants along the elegant square’s perimeter.

THE RHYTHM OF THE DANCE
Celebrate the spirit of Spain with a passionate performance of the country’s most famous dance. Cross the city with your local guide, passing through the vast and scenic square of Plaça d’Espanya. Your destination is the Poble Espanyol, or the Spanish Village. This architectural museum was built as a temporary exhibit for the Barcelona International Exhibition of 1929. Your guide will escort you through its charming streets lined with various architectural styles found throughout Spain. At the performance hall, settle in as dancers, guitarists and other musicians in colorful and flowing costume regale you with the lively, foot-stomping flamencos. During the energetic show, you will enjoy a typical tapas meal of small plates. Your guide will accompany you back to your ship at the end of the evening.

Take in the breathtaking Parc de la Ciutadella, once home to the garrison that protected the city. Covering almost 50 acres, the park was built between 1900 and 1914 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. La Sagrada Família is the centerpiece of your tour. You will approach it by foot and be rewarded with remarkable views of its towering, distinctive exterior. Construction began in 1882 and is scheduled for completion in 2026, the centenary of Gaudí’s death. Step inside to marvel at its breathtaking, fantastical sanctuary. Departing the ship, enjoy a drive through the Catalan countryside through the mountains of Montserrat and its Benedictine abbey, perched 4,000 feet above the valley below. Your guide will explain the daily life of the monks and the story of “The Black Virgin,” the statue found in the abbey’s basilica. The turreted private house was created for stock and currency broker Manuel Vicens i Montaner in 1885 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Montpellier has been a center of learning for centuries. Its namesake university, founded in 1160, is one of the world’s oldest, predating the Renaissance. Still, a student population breathes life into a vibrant culture. The social and cultural center of Montpellier is the Place de la Comédie, anchored by the elegant Three Graces fountain and the neoclassical Opéra Comédie. Other sites pay tribute to a rich heritage, from the art-filled Musée Fabre and impressive St. Clément Aqueduct to the St. Pierre Cathedral with its “floating” porch supported by a pair of towers.

Learn why Sète is a destination for seafood-loving gourmets as you watch the largest fishing fleet on France’s Mediterranean coast troll the fish-abundant waters. See Tour de Constance—a large defensive tower, which was transformed into a prison during France’s religious wars of the late-16th century. Travel back to medieval times during a visit to the fortified town of Carcassonne, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located at the crossroads of many trading routes, the site of Carcassonne was occupied through the ages by Celts, Romans, Visigoths and Saracens. Considered impregnable for centuries, this was the stronghold of the Cathar heresy until a Catholic army captured it in 1209 during the Albigensian Crusades. Drive through the picturesque countryside of the Languedoc province until you glimpse the majestic sight of the hilltop castle set against the Pyrenees. Enter the fortress of Carcassonne through the imposing Narbonne Gate. Experience the medieval heritage of Languedoc during visits to the charming town of Pézenas and Valmagne Abbey. Pézenas, built on a vineyard-covered plain, was the residence of the governors of the Languedoc province between the 16th and 18th centuries. Take a walking tour of the old town, admiring the mansions with elegant balconies, ornate doorways and narrow streets unchanged since the 17th century. Craftsmen and artists now occupy the workshops, creating abundant shopping opportunities. After, board your coach and drive to the great rose-colored Valmagne Abbey. Rising serenely above the surrounding Languedoc vineyards, the abbey was founded in the 12th century. Until the 14th century, it was one of the wealthiest abbeys in southern France, housing up to 3,200 Benedictine monks. Pair a panoramic tour of Sète and the Thau Lagoon with a tasting of finely aged wines. You will see the canals that make Sète famous before ascending to nearby Mont Saint-Clair by coach. Admire the views overlooking Sète, the Mediterranean Sea and the Thau Lagoon. Visit the Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette at the summit of Mont Saint-Clair. The construction of a canal to allow commercial navigation between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic was authorized by royal decree of 1666; the canal was inaugurated in 1681. Enjoy a scenic drive through the bucolic Languedoc landscape to Colombiers, where your cruise will start. As you sail, admire the blending of manmade structures and nature unfolding before your eyes. Venture off the beaten path in a 4x4 vehicle and immerse yourself in the culture and natural beauty of the Camargue. The largest delta in western Europe, the Camargue is a vast expanse of grassland, rice paddies, brine lagoons and reed-covered marshes. Take a drive to Le Grau-du-Roi, where you will meet your driver guide and head out into the delta. Learn about the region’s culture and history as you tour the idyllic landscape. Visit a historic wine estate and enjoy a tasting while its winemaker shares his knowledge of local vintages. The city of Narbonne traces its roots back to 118 BC, when it was located at an important commercial crossroads for the Roman Empire. Travel to this once-prosperous port, whose connection to the Mediterranean Sea silted up several centuries ago, for a guided walk through its historic city center. Stop to view the imposing Gothic-style facade of the cathedral; though its construction began in 1272, the church was never completed. Enjoy free time to explore independently before heading to 11th-century Fontfroide Abbey, a former Cistercian Order monastery and once one of the most powerful abbeys in Europe. Admire the cloister, the church and its stained glass windows before enjoying a delicious three-course Mediterranean-style lunch at the on-site restaurant. LEARN ABOUT A UNIQUE FARMING METHOD AND ENJOY DELICIOUS OYSTERS
Discover the unique method used to grow prized oysters, then sample the results during a delicious meal. Embark by motor coach on a drive along the Thau Lagoon to Maison Tarbouriech, an industry-leading oyster farm run by the Tarbouriechs. The family has pioneered a unique method for raising oysters in the lagoon. After learning how oysters grown in Atlantic Ocean beds are affected by the changing tide, Tarbouriech created Solar Tide, a patented solar- and wind-powered system designed to mimic those conditions for his oyster beds. The result is a delicious, pink-fleshed oyster with a salty-sweet flavor. Tour the oyster beds on board Barge, the farm’s oyster boat, while learning about the history and methods of the Tarbouriechs. Two 17th-century fortresses dominate the charming Vieux Port, or Old Port, the natural harbor that hosts all manner of watercraft, from sleek elegant yachts to old style fishing vessels. Day 1 - Florence, Italy
Today, take a self-guided walk through the cobblestone streets of the historic center of Pisa. At Miracle Square, see the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa, an engineering mistake turned world-famous attraction. Then, continue on to Florence for a guided tour of the city’s main attractions, including the cathedral and the elegant Baptistery of St. John, the Palazzo Vecchio and cross the ancient Ponte Vecchio. Day 2 - Livorno, Italy
After breakfast, drive through the Tuscan countryside to Volterra. Explore the town’s wealth of architectural gems, and meet artisans who produce decorative sculptures and ornaments from the local mineral rock. Enjoy free time to stroll the alleys and soak up the medieval atmosphere of Volterra. MEDIEVAL SAN MINIATO AND DIANELLA ESTATE
